How soon to plan a wedding?

I am engaged to be married. We just finalized the date. For September of this year.

Was wondering how soon I should begin planning, shopping, and how soon to send out invitation? My family lives out of state, if that changes anything.

I've never had to help plan or do anything for a wedding, so any advice would be appreciated.
